Catherine Daza Manchola (born in Valle del Cauca), Miss Colombia 2003, gained the right to compete in Miss Universe 2004 where she was one of the 15 semi-finalists. Although she was a favorite for the crown after fantastic performances in both evening gown and swimsuit events, she failed to make the top five.
She was crowned by her predecessor, Diana Lucia Mantilla Prada from Santander, in the usual venue in the Colombian city of Cartagena. She beat the favorite for the crown, Jeymmy Paola Vargas Gómez, who later on went on to win rival pageant Miss International.
Daza was beaten to the crown by Australian Jennifer Hawkins even though she walked with confidence and she used a completely different technique to the swimsuit. She tucked the sarong inside her bra and when her name was announced, she removed it with both arms exhibiting her body. She was highly praised for this move.
